Tange's Kagawa Gym: A Post-War Icon Reimagined

Seeing Kenzo Tange’s name pop up in a modern design competition definitely caught my eye. This architect basically laid some serious groundwork for modern Japanese design after the war, so any proposal to revive his work is a big deal.

The news is that Ethan Akiyama Poh won the Dezeen and Bentley Radical Renewal Competition for reimagining Tange's disused Kagawa gymnasium. It’s pretty brilliant how someone is looking at these historical, post-war structures – often brutalist, often iconic – and finding ways to bring them back to life in a way that respects their original spirit but also looks to the future. Tange's blend of traditional Japanese sensibilities with bold, modern forms is a classic, and seeing it reinterpreted is just *chef's kiss*.
